Chapter counts follow English Bibles; minutes assume about 200 words a minute.

How the generator builds your plan

It lays out every chapter you picked in Bible order, then cuts that line into as many reading days as your dates allow. Each cut lands on the chapter boundary closest to an even share of verses, so a day never stops halfway through a chapter, and a day of short chapters doesn’t turn into a marathon. If you choose the Old and New Testaments side by side, each testament is spread across the whole plan on its own, and every day gets a reading from both.

The minutes are an estimate at an unhurried pace of about 200 words a minute, counted from the words of each chapter in a standard English translation. A few days run long no matter what you do: Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, has 176 verses.

Days you leave unticked are not lost. Most people who finish a long plan say the same thing: the off days are what kept them going, because there was always room to catch up.

Choosing a pace

These are the plans the generator makes for a few common goals. The numbers are averages per reading day, worked out with the same method as the tool above.

The whole Bible (66 books, 1,189 chapters) at different paces. Reading five days a week instead of seven leaves the weekend free for catching up, and each reading day gets about 40 percent longer.

If you have never read the whole Bible before, a two-year plan or the New Testament first is a kind place to start. Fifteen minutes a day you keep beats forty minutes a day you abandon in March.

For churches and small groups

  • One plan for everyone. Set up the plan, then press Copy link to this plan. Anyone who opens the link gets the same dates and readings, so the whole group reads the same chapters on the same days.
  • Printed copies. The Print button gives a clean two-column checklist with no website clutter. Name the plan first and the name prints at the top.
  • Calendars. Add to calendar downloads a standard .ics file. Phones, Google Calendar and Outlook add each day’s reading as an all-day event.
  • Seasons. For Advent, Lent or the fifty days of Easter, our ready-made seasonal plans follow the church calendar day by day.

Put the generator on your church or group website

Copy the code below into an HTML, code or embed block (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Weebly and most church website builders have one). Your members get the full generator on your own page, free and with no sign-up. Please keep the one-line credit under it.

The small script in the code lets the box grow to fit the plan. If your site strips scripts, the generator still works; it just scrolls inside a fixed-height box.

Questions

Does it work with my Bible translation?

Yes. Chapter divisions are the same in nearly every English Bible, so the readings fit any modern translation. Only the time estimates depend on wording, and only slightly.

What about Catholic and Orthodox Bibles?

Tick Include the deuterocanonical books and the plan follows the 73-book Catholic Old Testament: Tobit and Judith after Nehemiah, 1 and 2 Maccabees after Esther, Wisdom and Sirach after the Song of Songs, Baruch after Lamentations, and Daniel with its fourteen chapters. Orthodox Bibles include these books and a few more, such as 1 Esdras, 3 Maccabees and the Prayer of Manasseh, which you can add by hand. Orthodox and some older Catholic Bibles also number most psalms one lower, following the Greek, so Psalm 51 in the plan is Psalm 50 in those Bibles.

I fell behind. Do I start over?

No. Pick up where you stopped. If the gap is big, make a new plan that starts today with the books you have left. Your old check marks stay saved in this browser under the old plan.

Is anything about my plan sent to you?

No. The plan is worked out inside your browser, and your check marks are saved only on your device. Clearing your browser data clears them.

  • Works for 66- and 73-book Bibles

Method. Chapter and verse counts follow the English (Protestant) versification shared by the ESV, KJV and WEB; the 66 books have 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses. Time estimates divide each chapter’s word count in the King James Version by 200 words a minute. Counts for the deuterocanonical books come from the public-domain World English Bible (eBible.org) and follow the order of the New American Bible. Each reading day is cut at the chapter boundary nearest an even share of verses, with a small allowance per chapter so days of very short chapters stay reasonable.

A verse you already know, read all the way through.

Most of the verses we lean on hardest are the ones we have only ever read alone. Weekday Grace puts them back in the paragraph they came from.
